Life Review with the Elderly
Sometimes listening to their story, and sometimes encouraging them to write about it, or paint or model elements of their lives can enhance social and family connections. Sharing their life stories can nurture their sense of self. The writing and sharing process can add meaning to their life by helping them better understand the past and present. Sometimes there are feelings of resentment towards a member of the family and by working with their grief or anger, reconciliation can be fostered, and culminating in forgiveness. In my experiences of listening to the elderly at the Paddington Day Respite Centre, it is evident that telling parts of their life story is of great satisfaction and comfort. Sometimes listening to their story, and sometimes encouraging them to write about it, or paint or model elements of their life, gives them a voice for reminiscing.
